In\nmodernist thought, and even more so in that of the avant-garde of the\nmid-twentieth century, the materiality of the painting was the subject of\nreflection. This reflection primarily concerned concrete art, but also led to\nthe dissociation of its constituent elements, as was the case with movements\nsuch as Support\/Surface and artists such as Imi Kn\u0153bel. <\/span><\/p>\n\nIn French, the front and back of a flat surface\nsuch as a paper, document or painting are known as \u201crecto\u201d or front, and\n\u201cverso\u201d or back. By photographing the backs of paintings, Philippe Gronon\npresents us with what are effectively new paintings. They are often visually\nseductive, most often fortuitous or sometimes voluntary, as is the case with\nVictor Brauner, who draws on the backs of his works. But by giving us access to\nwhat is behind the scenes, he reveals specific techniques of elaboration\n(Picasso, Dolla) and above all, to the secrets of History. <\/span>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
